When I try to use cyrillic fonts they come out in english. How do I get them to be displayed as cyrillic characters?

I think that the difference is between the versions of the font (Mac version different from Windows'). Does it happen with all fonts? What is the font format (TTF, OTF…)?

Squares around drop shadows AARRRGGGG!!!!!!
